Can’t plant straight away?
Place in a sheltered spot and water regularly to keep the compost moist
Planting tips and hints:
Planting in the ground: Dig a hole approximately twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the plant’s rootball. If your soil is heavy mix in a soil improver before backfilling. Plant clematis deep, with the crown of the plant at least5-8cm (3in) below ground level to encourage bushy plants. Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly. Clematis prefer their roots to be cool, so plant with the roots in shade or shield them by placing tiles or stones around the base of the plant.
Planting in containers: Plant in a container at least 45cm in diameter, with good drainage holes, filled with multi-purpose compost.
Aftercare
Water regularly in the first year after planting and in dry periods
Group 3 clematis: In the first year after planting, prune hard in early spring, cutting back to above a strong pair of buds about 30cm above ground level. Prune established plants in late winter or early spring, cutting all stems to just above strong buds 15-30cm above ground level.
