Better known as Lily-of-the-Valley, Convallaria majalis is a much-loved spring bulb producing delicate bell-like white flowers with a very sweet scent in late spring, held on arching stems.

This reliable performer grows well in shade and will spread quickly, with the lush green foliage making excellent groundcover.

How you will receive your bulbs:

Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your Convallaria bare-root rhizomes in early spring in a breathable mesh bag. This keeps them healthy while in transit.

Can’t plant straight away?

Keep your rhizomes in a cool, light, and dry place and preferably hanging on a hook so that air can get to the bulbs at all angles. Ideally, you should aim to plant them within a week of receiving them, but if this is not possible, store them in a cool, dark place until you are ready to plant them.

Planting tips and hints:

Planting in pots: Your convallaria plants will be sent as bare root rhizomes. You can plant them any time in March and April. It’s best to start them off indoors in small pots, then plant them out in the ground once they have started to grow.

Soak the roots in water for half an hour before you plant them. Part-fill indiviual small pots with compost, then place a rhizome in each pot and fill with compost so that the top of the root is 1cm below the surface of the compost.

Water the pots and place them in a bright, frost-free place. Water regularly. Once the roots fill the pot, the plants are ready to plant outside.

Planting directly outdoors: You can also plant convallaria rhizomes directly outdoors in March and April.

Dig a hole with a trowel or a bulb planter 5-8cm deep. Plant rhizomes approximately 20cm apart. If your soil is heavy, mix in quality bulb compost and potting grit to give them the best start. Place a root in the hole so that the top of the root is around 1cm below the surface of the soil, then fill the hole and compact the soil gently. Water in to moisten the soil and apply a bone meal fertiliser to encourage flowering.

Feeding and aftercare: Convallaria majalis needs little or no feeding or cutting back. Water regularly during dry periods.

*Planting and flowering months below are subject to seasonal weather conditions.
