Cornus, or dogwoods, are fast-growing deciduous shrubs which steal the show when their coloured stems brighten the muted tones of the garden in winter. Cornus alba 'Ivory Halo'® provides interest in your garden in all seasons. In summer the variegated cream- edged leaves of Cornus alba 'Ivory Halo'® will lighten shady corners, turning red before falling in autumn to reveal deep red stems. This easy to grow shrub has creamy flowers clusters in spring, a magnet for pollinating insects, followed by white berries. Cornus alba 'Ivory Halo'® can reach a height of 2.5 metres.

From the second spring after planting, dogwoods need to be hard pruned every year to maintain the display of coloured stems. This work can be carried out from late March to mid-April by cutting the stems back to between 5 and 8 cm from the ground. This is called coppicing. Where stems are cut back to within 60-90cm from the ground, the process is called pollarding. Red-stemmed dogwoods such as Cornus alba 'Ivory Halo'® stand out well in winter when planted en masse against a backdrop of dark green evergreens such as Portugese laurel or yew.
