Cornus, or dogwoods, are fast-growing deciduous shrubs which steal the show when their coloured stems brighten the muted tones of the garden in winter. Cornus alba 'Miracle' offers a wide spectrum of shades throughout the year. From pink-flushed foliage in spring maturing to green and white variegation, and red-tinted autumn leaves, the display concludes when the bright red bare winter stems are revealed. Cornus alba 'Miracle' has white flowers clusters in May and June, attractive to pollinating insects, followed by blue-black berries and will grow to a height of 1.5 metres. Cornus alba 'Miracle' will grow in a sunny or partly shaded position, ideally in consistently moist soil. Combines well with dark-red flowered Persicaria.

From the second spring after planting, dogwoods need to be hard pruned every year to maintain the display of coloured stems. This work can be carried out from late March to mid-April by cutting the stems back to between 5 and 8 cm from the ground. This is called coppicing. Where stems are cut back to within 60-90cm from the ground, the process is called pollarding.

How you will receive your plants:

Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your plant in a pot, ready to plant out.

Can’t plant straight away?

Place the pot in a sheltered spot outdoors and water regularly to keep the soil moist.

Planting in the ground:

Dig a hole slightly wider than the rootball of the plant. Place the plant in the hole so that it sits at the same level in the ground as it did in the pot. When backfilling, mix in a soil improver such as well-rotted farmyard manure. Firm the soil around the plant and water well.

Planting in containers:

Choose a pot with good drainage holes. Place stones or crocks (bits of broken pottery) at the bottom of the pot to stop the drainage holes clogging up. Use a good quality compost. Feed and water container-grown plants regularly.
