Harvest

Lemon-yellow, spherical cucumbers that are tender and sweet. These easy-grow curious yet attractive ‘rounds’ are excellent for salads and pickling. You can expect a long and fruitful harvesting season with this heavy-croppers.

Sowing Indoors

Sow seeds in individual 9cm (3 ½ in) pots filled with seed compost. Push these large seeds on their side into the compost to a depth of 1cm (1/2 in). Place in a warm environment 20-25°C (70-75°F). As seedlings develop grow on in cooler, light conditions but avoid direct sunlight.

Planting on indoors

Transplant young plants to grow bags, pots or a border in the greenhouse and providing string or cane supports to train stems up.

Planting on outdoors

Gradually accustom plants to outdoor conditions for two to three weeks before planting out to permanent outdoor planting positions. Space plants 30cm (12in) apart.

If growing outdoors provide a protected shelter like a mini polytunnel as this variety appreciates a warm environment.

Harvests

Regular picking promotes further growth. Water well and feed with a high-potash fertiliser when flowers appear to encourage flower and fruiting.

How To Grow

Growing cucumbers from seed is a brilliant way to enjoy fresh, flavour-packed harvests straight from your garden or greenhouse. These productive plants are easy to grow, quick to establish, and a joy to pick once the season gets going.

Indoor Sowing
Start seeds indoors from April, sowing into small pots of quality seed compost mixed with about 25% vermiculite for moisture retention. Keep them warm and bright on a sunny windowsill or in a heated propagator. Once seedlings develop a few true leaves and the risk of frost has passed, harden them off before moving outdoors or into a greenhouse.

Planting Out
Harden seedlings gradually over 7–14 days, placing them outside for a few hours each day. Transplant into larger pots, growbags, or beds in fertile, well-drained soil in a sheltered sunny spot. Allow 45cm between plants and 45cm between rows.

Outdoor Sowing
Direct sow from late May to June, when soil is warm and frost-free. Cover seeds lightly and water well. This method suits warmer regions, though indoor sowing gives a more reliable start in cooler areas.

Harvesting
Cut cucumbers from the vine with a sharp knife or scissors to avoid damaging plants. Harvest regularly to encourage continuous cropping.

Companion Planting
Grow cucumbers alongside marigolds, nasturtiums or radishes to deter pests and support healthier growth.
