Dahlia 'Bishop of York' is a much-loved variety from the classic Bishop series, known for its bright, cheerful blooms and dramatic foliage. Its single flowers shine in a vibrant lemon-yellow shade, each accented with a warm orange centre that attracts bees, butterflies and other pollinators throughout the summer. The rich, dark foliage provides a striking backdrop, making the flowers stand out beautifully in mixed borders and late-season displays.
Supplied as high-quality tubers, 'Bishop of York' is easy to grow and delivers consistent colour from mid-summer right through to the first frosts. This compact yet showy variety performs brilliantly in sunny borders and is ideal for adding structure and warmth to cottage gardens, wildlife-friendly spaces and cutting beds. With its long flowering season, pollinator appeal and distinctive appearance, it is a perfect choice for gardeners seeking vibrant, low-maintenance summer impact.
Guide To Size Plants

All sizes offer vibrant blooms for summer displays, with varieties suited to pots, borders, or cutting gardens.
How To Grow
How to Grow Dahlias:
Plant dahlias in a sunny spot with well-drained, fertile soil enriched with compost or organic matter. Space plants 30-60cm apart depending on their final size, ensuring good air circulation. Tubers should be planted 10-15cm deep with the crown upwards, while plug plants and potted dahlias can be planted at the same depth as in their pots. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Pinch out the growing tips when plants are 30cm tall to encourage bushier growth and more flowers. Stake taller varieties early to prevent wind damage. Regular deadheading promotes continuous blooms, and feeding every 2-3 weeks with a high-potash fertiliser enhances flowering. Lift tubers after the first frost, dry them, and store in a cool, frost-free place for winter, or mulch deeply in mild climates to overwinter in the ground.
