The tall shuttlecock-like ‘King of the Male Ferns’ really cuts a dash, whether it’s in a shady spot or part of a border that enjoys full sunlight. It can also be grown in large pots. It’s almost evergreen, which means it looks good throughout much of the year. Team it with other shade lovers, such as hostas, or use as an accent in a brighter spot. Cut back any dead fronds in winter to encourage new ones to appear. Holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

How you will receive your ferns:

Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, you will receive your fern in a pot, ready to plant out.

Can’t plant straight away?

Keep your fern in partial shade and keep the soil moist.

Planting tips and hints:

Planting in the ground: You can plant your fern at any time, as long as the ground is not frozen. Dig a hole the same size as the pot it comes in, water well and place the fern in the hole with the top of its compost level with the surface of the soil. Allow 1.5 metres between this plant and others as it will cover more ground as it grows. Water well.

Planting in containers: Fill container with good quality, moisture-retentive but free-draining compost. Make a hole that’s the same size of the pot the fern comes in, water it well and place the fern within the hole. Water again to ensure the compost is moist.

Aftercare: Cut back any dead fronds to encourage new growth. Split ferns that grow too large in spring, before new fronds unfurl.
