Flowering
Echium vulgare (Viper's bugloss) is an easy-to-grow native British wildflower producing spires of beautiful blue flowers in summer. Long-flowering and drought-resistant, it’s a huge favourite with bees and other pollinators. Echium vulgare is biennial, so will flower in its second year after sowing. It will self seed.
Sow outdoors
Sow in well-prepared, soil once it starts to warm up, and cover to around 6mm deep, watering as necessary. Choose a sunny spot in well-drained ground. Allow a few weeks for germination.
Thin
Thin young seedlings to the required spacing when large enough to handle. Earlier sowings will flower later the same year; later sowings will flower earlier the following year.
Aftercare
Deadhead to prolong flowering. Leave some plants to self-seed if desired.
How to grow
Sow seeds on to the surface of pre-watered seed compost, but don't cover them. Keep warm, around 20°C and keep moist, but not wet. Allow 1-2 weeks for germination.
