For a long-lasting shot of intense colour, Eryngium ‘Big Blue’ is a real winner.

Its large cone-like heads made up of tiny flowers that are surrounded by a circle of spiny bracts. Great for mixing with other perennials in a sunny border. Its seed heads provide valuable winter interest.

Eryngium ‘Big Blue’ is a real eye catcher, growing to around a metre (39ins) in height and up to 50cm (20ins) in width and producing generous numbers of intensely blue flowers that stand out against green-grey foliage and are popular with bees and butterflies. They’re great for cutting too. Sea holly blooms for much of the summer and is tolerant of spells of dry weather. This perennial can be left to stand over the winter months, when frost brings a sparkle to its seedheads. Towards the end of the year this plant provides valuable winter sustenance for birds and shelter for insects. In colder areas it’s wise to mulch it well to protect its roots from extreme temperatures. Eyrngium x zabelii ‘Big Blue’ holds the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Sea holly is a fantastic plant for pollinating insects and birds love its seeds.

Tolerant of dry weather and will grow in most soils. Loves coastal areas.

How you will receive your plants:

Selected by our team of experts and sent from our nursery, this will be supplied in a 9cm pot (measured by the diameter of the pot). With a well strong root system in place, you can plant out in the garden straight away and leave them to establish, or you can grow them in larger pots as they are still young, before planting out to create a stunning garden display.

Can’t plant straight away?

If you aren't able to plant out straight away, then ensure they stay moist. You can place pots on a saucer or tray of shallow water so they are able to stay hydrated. Aim to have them planted within 3 days.
