Fill & Sow

Fill each deep cell with a quality seed and cutting compost. Sow your seeds at the depth recommended on the seed packet, then water carefully to moisten the compost.

Cover for Germination

Place the propagator lid over the tray while your seeds germinate. Keep the compost appropriately moist and follow the temperature and light requirements for the seeds you're growing.

Grow Your Seedlings On

Once your seedlings appear, continue growing them until they have developed a healthy root system and are large enough to move on. The transparent cells make it easy to check root development and moisture levels as they grow.

Flowers & Vegetables

The deep cells are ideal for plants that develop long or vigorous root systems, including sweet peas, broad beans, French beans, runner beans, peas, sweetcorn and sunflowers.

Why Use Deep Cells?

The extra depth gives developing roots more room to grow downwards than a standard shallow seed tray. Each seedling also grows in its own cell, helping to prevent roots becoming tangled with neighbouring plants and making transplanting easier.

Ideal for Sweet Peas

Sweet peas develop substantial root systems while they're young, making them particularly well suited to deep growing cells. The additional depth gives their roots more room to develop before the plants are moved outside.

When to Transplant

Your seedlings are ready to move on once they're well established with a healthy root system. The transparent cells let you check how the roots are developing without removing the plant.

Harden Plants Off

If your seedlings have been raised indoors or in a greenhouse, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions before planting out. Place them outside in a sheltered position during the day, bringing them back under cover at night, then gradually increase the time they spend outside.

Removing Your Seedlings

Open the cell carefully and remove the seedling with its roots and compost intact. Avoid pulling the plant by its stem, as this can damage young growth and roots.

Planting Out

Plant at the depth and spacing recommended for the variety you're growing, gently firm the soil around the roots and water thoroughly. Protect young plants from late frosts and pests where necessary.

Clean & Reuse

After use, empty out any remaining compost and rinse the cells, tray and lid thoroughly. Allow them to dry before storing or using them again for your next batch of seeds.
