Hazelnut Webb’s Prize is a native deciduous English hazelnut, it is very quick and easy to grow. It readily produces a reliable crop of large clusters of delicious nuts. It is classified as a cobnut rather than a filbert which is another type of hazelnut. For best results two or more different hazelnut cultivars should be planted near each other.
By late winter the catkins on the tree will be sending little amounts of pollen into the air. This is the best time to prune the tree as it allows pollen to fall on to the red female flowers of the tree. The tree should be pruned between January and March, this is done by removing some of the older and thicker branches out at the base of tree.
It is time to harvest the nuts when ruffled jackets start to turn yellow. You should aim to pick the fruits on a dry day when the husks are just about turning yellow. Both varieties, cobnuts and filberts will both grow in shade, but they fruit much better in good lighting so it is important to plant the tree in an open position.
