Heliopsis ‘Burning Hearts’ sets the border alight with colour, flowering abundantly from its first year with vivid yellow and red flowers looking like mini-sunflowers against a backdrop of striking purple-black stems and leaves. This tough, reliable perennial is drought tolerant and copes well with coastal conditions. The flowers are very attractive to pollinators and make beautiful cut flowers.

Sow indoors

Sow on the surface of pre-watered seed compost, in pots or trays, and cover with a very fine layer of compost. Keep around 20°C (68F), do not exclude light and allow 2-4 weeks for germination.

Grow on

Transplant into 8cm pots when seedlings are large enough to handle. Grow on at 12-15°C. Autumn sowings can be overwintered in a cold frame prior to planting out.

Plant out

Plant out in well drained soil in full sun, 40cm apart.

Aftercare

Deadhead to prolong the flowering period. Cut down in late autumn as the plant dies off. Clumps can be divided every 3 years.
