Harvest
A must for Thai and Vietnamese cooking; both the stems and leaves of Lemon grass have a delicious citrus flavour. The leaves are great for herbal teas too. Lemon grass is a tropical plant, so loves heat. Grow it outdoors in summer as an annual in a sheltered sunny spot or overwinter it in a greenhouse.
Sow indoors
January-December: Sow in trays of compost and cover with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite. Water well. Keep at a temperature of between 18-21°C (64-70°F) in a well-lit position until germination takes place. When large enough to handle, pot on into larger pots and grow on indoors
Plant out
March-June: Plant out 25cm (10in) apart once all risk of frost is past.
Tips
Lemon grass can be overwintered in pots in a greenhouse at a minimum temperature of 7°C (45°F).
