Tall spires of intense purple-black flowers with contrasting yellow centres add a dramatic touch to sunny cottage garden borders. Striking hollyhock ‘Blacknight’ looks fantastic planted in groups, adding both height and interest, and the flowers are very attractive to pollinators. Unlike most hollyhocks, the Spotlight hollyhock series are perennial rather than biennial.

Sow indoors

Almost fill a seed tray with moist seed compost. Sow seeds thinly over the surface and lightly cover with a little more compost. Place in warmth, 15-20°C and keep moist.

Grow on

Keep seedlings in a light position but shade from bright sun. When large enough to handle transplant individually to 8cm pots of potting compost.

Plant out

Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2-3 weeks before planting out in full sun from early summer onwards. Allow 30cm between plants.

Tips

Seed can also be sown in late summer for an earlier display the following season. Keep them in a frost free place over winter before planting out when the risk of frost has passed.

How to grow

Sow seeds on to the surface of pre-watered seed compost, but don't cover them. Keep warm, around 20°C and keep moist, but not wet. Allow 1-2 weeks for germination.
