Flowering
Hollyhock ‘Polarstar’ looks refreshingly cool all summer with its tall spires of pure white flowers with yellow-green centres. A cottage garden classic, this elegant hollyhock adds height and interest to borders and the flowers are a magnet for pollinators. Unlike most hollyhocks, the Spotlight hollyhock series are perennial rather than biennial.
Sow indoors
Almost fill a seed tray with moist seed compost. Sow seeds thinly over the surface and lightly cover with a little more compost. Place in warmth, 15-20°C and keep moist.
Grow on
Keep seedlings in a light position but shade from bright sun. When large enough to handle transplant individually to 8cm pots of potting compost.
Plant out
Tips
Seed can also be sown in late summer for an earlier display the following season. Keep them in a frost free place over winter before planting out when the risk of frost has passed.
How to grow
Sow seeds on to the surface of pre-watered seed compost, but don't cover them. Keep warm, around 20°C and keep moist, but not wet. Allow 1-2 weeks for germination.
