A native British wildflower now rarely seen outside gardens, Meadow Clary (Salvia pratensis) flowers all summer. The long flowerspires, usually an intense violet-blue but occasionally pink or white, are very popular with pollinators and this attractive wildflower fits well into cottage garden or informal planting. An easy-to-grow, trouble-free plant.
Sow indoors
Almost fill a seed tray with pre-watered seed compost. Sow seeds thinly over the surface. Place in the warmth, around 20°C, keep moist but not wet and allow 2-4 weeks for germination.
Grow on
Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight. When large enough to handle, transplant individually to 8cm pots of potting compost.
Plant out
Choose a sunny spot in any well-drained soil. Plant approximately 45cm apart.
How to grow
Sow seeds on to the surface of pre-watered seed compost, but don't cover them. Keep warm, around 20°C and keep moist, but not wet. Allow 1-2 weeks for germination.
