Flowering
Liatris ‘Floristan Violet’ brings fantastic late summer colour to the garden with tall bottlebrush spikes packed with vibrant violet flowers. This colourful perennial adds vertical accents to the border and combines beautifully with other late summer perennials. Bees, butterflies and other pollinators love the fluffy flowers, and the long spires are ideal for cutting.
Sow indoors
Sow on to the surface of pots or trays of pre-wetted compost and cover very lightly with vermiculite or more compost. Place in a propagator at 20-24°C, keep moist and allow 3-4 weeks for germination.
Grow on
Transplant into 8cm pots when seedlings are large enough to handle. Grow on at 12-15°C. Autumn sowings can be overwintered indoors prior to planting out the following spring.
Plant out
Slowly acclimatise to outdoor conditions and plant out when all danger of frost has passed, in a well-drained, sunny border, about 30cm apart.
Aftercare
Deadhead spent flower spikes to prolong blooming. For cutting, take flower spikes that have only partially opened. Divide plants every 3 years or so.
How to grow
Sow seeds on to the surface of pre-watered seed compost, but don't cover them. Keep warm, around 20°C and keep moist, but not wet. Allow 1-2 weeks for germination.
