A beautiful native British wildflower, Musk Mallow (Malva moschata) produces masses of pink saucer-shaped flowers with a light musky scent, covering bushy plants all summer long. Happy in dry, sunny soils, it’s a favourite with bees and butterflies and perfect for cottage garden planting.

Sow outdoors

Sow in trays of pre-watered seed compost and cover lightly. Keep in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse and allow 3-4 weeks for germination. Alternatively, sow directly into the final position in April to May, in a sunny spot in well-prepared soil and lightly cover with a little more soil.

Grow on

When large enough to handle, transplant into 8cm pots. Slowly acclimatise to outdoor conditions before planting out after frosts.

Plant out

Choose a sunny spot in any well-drained soil. Allow approximately 30cm between plants.

Aftercare

Cut back in late autumn after the growth has died down. May self-seed.

How to grow

Sow seeds on to the surface of pre-watered seed compost, but don't cover them. Keep warm, around 20°C and keep moist, but not wet. Allow 1-2 weeks for germination.
