Flowering
Monarda hybrida ‘Bergamo’ flowers all through summer, producing masses of bright rose-purple flowers on long stems. Bees and butterflies love the flowers and the foliage has a fresh minty scent. This annual variety is perfect for pots and borders, and is ideal for cutting.
Sow indoors
Almost fill a seed tray with moist seed compost. Sow seeds thinly over the surface and lightly cover them with a little more compost. Place in the warmth, 20-25°C and keep moist.
Grow on
Keep seedlings in a light position but shade from bright sun. When large enough to handle transplant 5cm apart into trays, or individually into 8cm pots, of potting compost.
Harden off/plant out
Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions for 2-3 weeks before planting out 30cm apart when risk of frost has passed. Plant in sun or light shade in well-drained soil.
Aftercare
Avoid allowing plants to dry out in summer to reduce the risk of mildew.
How to grow
Sow seeds on to the surface of pre-watered seed compost, but don't cover them. Keep warm, around 20°C and keep moist, but not wet. Allow 1-2 weeks for germination.
