Allium Cepa - These red onions originated in Italy and the Tropea from Calabria is recognised as the finest.
They are considered so sweet, you can almost eat them like an apple! The high sugar content means they eat well raw but they also caramelise beautifully.

Plant 20cm apart and harvest when the plants start to flop over in late summer or early autumn.

The Hairy Bikers called it the 'best onion in the world' in 2018 on their Mediterranean journey series and in Oct 2022 they were featured by Stanley Tucci in his series Searching for Italy. Red onions store well over winter in a cool dark dry place.
