Fiery chilli pepper ‘Habanero Chocolate’ scores a scorching 300-400,000 SHU on the Scoville heat scale, adding a real kick to your favourite dishes! The fruits have a rich, smoky flavour and turn chocolate brown when ripe. Also known as ‘Congo Black’, this attractive chilli pepper needs a long growing period, so sow the seeds early for the best results.
Sow indoors
February-April: Sow individually 1/2cm (1⁄4in) in clean module trays of firm pre-watered compost. Cover with a fine layer of vermiculite. Place in constant warmth 18°C (65°F) and keep soil moist at all times. Slowly reduce the heat to 14°C (57°F) and increase ventilation after germination to keep plants from getting leggy. Prick out when large enough to handle individually into 9cm (3 1⁄2in) pots filled with good quality compost.
Grow on
May: Plant out into individual pots or growing bags at a minimum temperature of 15°C (60°F).
Tips
Water regularly and feed weekly with a liquid fertiliser once fruits start to swell.
Caution
Wash hands and avoid touching eyes after handling chillis.
