How to grow

How you will receive your plants: Your rhubarb crowns will arrive carefully packaged, ready to plant.

Can’t plant straight away? Store crowns in a cool place and keep the roots moist. Plant as soon as possible, ideally within a few days.

Planting tips and hints:

In containers: Grow the rhubarb crown in a pot for around a month before planting out. Use a large pot of compost, keeping the growing point level with the top of the compost. Water regularly but avoid waterlogging.

In the ground: Plant crowns with the top just visible above the soil and space them 75-90cm apart. Water well after planting.

Aftercare: Water during dry periods and feed with a general-purpose fertiliser in summer. Avoid harvesting in the first year; in the second year, harvest only a few stems and stop by July to let the plant build up reserves.

Guide To Plant Sizes

Bulbs, Tubers, Corms & Rhizomes

These come in a variety of forms, depending on the plant type, and are supplied in a dormant state. They are available only at the optimum time for planting. Where possible we choose the top size and quality grading to help ensure plants will produce great blooms from their first year. On arrival, pot up and keep in a frost-free area or plant into their final position once the risk of frost has passed.
