The black elder, Sambucus nigra ‘Black Beauty’, will make its presence felt in any garden border from spring through to autumn. The black elder, Sambucus nigra ‘Black Beauty’, will make its presence felt in any garden border from spring through to autumn. The elegant, deep purple (almost black) foliage that emerges each spring is adorned by red buds and then contrasting, flattish, fragrant heads of a beautiful pink colour in early summer. Birds also take an interest in autumn when the dark fruits appear. It’s fully hardy and will increase in size to a height and spread of 3 to 4m but can be kept in check by pruning.

Planting tips and hints:

Dig a hole approximately twice as deep and 3 times as wide as the plant’s rootball. If your soil is heavy mix in a soil improver before backfilling. Firm the soil around the plant and water thoroughly.

Water shrubs regularly in the first year after planting and in dry periods
