Strulch is a light and easy to use garden mulch made from wheat straw for organic gardening. A patented process developed by Dr Geoff Whiteley at The University of Leeds, is used to ‘preserve’ the straw so that it lasts for up to two years and gives an earthy brown colour.
Strulch has a neutral pH and can be used throughout the garden on borders, raised beds, around cultivated fruit and on vegetable plots.
Strulch carries a host of benefits for gardeners looking to keep their soil healthy. Its light weight and neutral pH make Strulch easy to apply and won't disrupt the pH balance of existing soil. It also helps retain moisture, helping to protect plants from dehydration.
When growing plants from seed or using small plug plants, it's best to leave some space between rows—about 6 to 10 inches—until the plants are well established. This helps prevent contact with young, delicate leaves. Additionally, leaving a clear area around the base of each plant allows air to circulate, promoting healthier growth.
Since Strulch works by blocking light, it's important to wait until your vegetable plants are well established before applying it. Once ready, spread Strulch around the plants or between rows to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture effectively.
