Description
Sweet Chestnut tree is an extremely long-lived, fast-growing and stately tree that is native to Britain. Sweet Chestnut trees usually grow to around 8 meters after 10 years, to 12 meters after 20 years and the total height grows to around 35 meters after many years, they can live for up to 700 years.
The branches of the tree spread widely if they are simply left to grow, if they are heavily trimmed they can form into small bushes.
The leaves of the chestnut tree are some of the longest leaves found In the UK and measure at 10-25cm in their length. The leaves will turn a golden yellow then to orange in autumn.
The catkins can be found in July, there are both male and female flowers. The female flowers mature into spikey green fruits which can contain 1 to 3 excellent chestnuts when matured. The tree's bark is dark brown and has deep vertical cracks which spiral up the tree.
The Sweet Chestnut is often found in the southern areas of Europe, the Mediterranean, and Asia Minor, it was first introduced and grown in the UK by the Romans. It grows very well on light and acidic soils, it dislikes chalky and heavy soil, and is very drought resistant.
The bark of the tree is very useful, it is 20% lighter than oak. It can be used outdoors for fencing without having to be treated even if it is in contact with damp soil conditions. The bark can also be used indoors for paneling and beams.
