Harvest

Harvest
  • Thick cobs with up to 20 rows of sweet kernels
  • Vigorous plants add structure and height to the plot
  • Can be used as windbreaks for smaller crops

Sweetcorn ‘Tyson’ is a powerhouse variety, producing long, chunky cobs with exceptional kernel density. With up to 20 rows of sweet, juicy kernels per cob, it offers more flavour and yield than many traditional varieties.

These strong, tall plants not only deliver heavy harvests but also serve a dual purpose in the vegetable garden. Their height makes them an excellent natural windbreak, offering protection to more delicate crops nearby.

Perfect eaten straight from the plant or cooked fresh, ‘Tyson’ combines flavour, productivity, and practicality, making it a superb choice for gardeners looking for a standout sweetcorn crop.

How To Grow

There’s something special about growing your own sweetcorn. Picked fresh and cooked within minutes, homegrown cobs are bursting with sweetness and flavour that shop-bought simply can’t match. Sow early and give plants a warm, sunny spot and you’ll be rewarded with golden kernels perfect for summer feasts.

Indoor Sowing
Sow one seed per pot in moist seed compost from April, keeping them on a sunny windowsill or in a heated propagator. Sweetcorn loves warmth, so this head start helps plants grow strong. Once seedlings reach around 15cm tall and frosts have passed, they’re ready to move outdoors.

Planting Out
Harden off seedlings gradually over 7–14 days before transplanting. Plant 2.5cm deep, spacing 45cm between plants and 45cm between rows. Grow in blocks rather than rows for better pollination and fuller cobs.

Outdoor Sowing
Direct sow once soil has warmed and frost risk has passed. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot and sow in blocks for reliable pollination.

Harvesting
Check readiness with the fingernail test: peel back the husk and press a kernel. If the liquid is milky, the cob is ready to harvest.

Companion Planting
Grow sweetcorn with climbing beans and squash—the traditional “three sisters” planting—where beans add nitrogen and squash shades soil to keep weeds down.
