When to plant Chard Seeds

Chard seeds are best planted in early spring (March to April) as soon as the soil is workable, or in late summer (August to September) for a winter crop. Chard is hardy and can withstand cooler temperatures, but avoid planting in areas that are prone to frost. For an extended harvest, you can sow seeds every 3-4 weeks during the growing season.

How to Plant Chard Seeds

Sow chard seeds directly into well-drained, fertile soil. Choose a sunny spot with good air circulation. Plant seeds about 1.5cm deep and space them 20-30cm apart in rows. Thin seedlings as they grow to ensure they have enough space to mature. Water regularly to keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged. For early crops, you can also start seeds indoors and transplant them once they are large enough to handle.

Chard seeds typically germinate within 7-14 days, depending on the temperature. Once established, chard plants can be harvested in about 6-8 weeks, depending on the variety.
