Harvest
Also known as ruby chard, decorative Chard ‘Rhubarb’ brightens up the vegetable garden in summer and autumn with its dark green crinkled leaves and striking crimson stems. The leaves, which are packed with vitamins and anti-oxidants, can be cooked in the same way as spinach, and the red stems also taste good chopped and steamed. Holds the RHS Award of Garden Merit.
Sow outdoors
April-July: Sow seeds thinly directly in harvest location 1.25cm (1?2in) deep in rows 40cm (16in) apart. Keep soil moist at all times. Thin to 15cm (6in) apart.
Tips
Use thinnings as salad leaf. Plants will continue cropping in all but the worst weather especially if given some winter protection.
