Harvest

Harvest
  • Large and meaty tomatoes
  • Regularly features in competitions
  • Vigorous plants

Country Taste produces delicious meaty fruits, ideal for slicing, frying and grilling and perfect for stuffing. It produces a particulary early crop when grown under glass and has the potential to be an exhibition variety too worthy of winning on the showbench.

Even if you don’t enter your tomatoes in a local competition, you’ll be impressing neighbours and garden guests when you show them your home-grown harvests. To produce extra-large fruit we recommend you restrict to three or four tomatoes on every truss. Pinch out flowers from the tip of the trusses to leave three or four at the base.

A cordon variety, Country Taste naturally grows tall and upright. In a greenhouse the leaves quickly fill your greenhouse with a delicious scent before and during the fruit-formation. You receive 10 seeds in every packet, a great-value way of acquiring impressive toms and filling the side of a greenhouse with a great crop.

How to grow

Tomatoes are easy to grow from seed, provided you have somewhere warm and sunny to sow them. A heated greenhouse is ideal, but you can also sow tomato seeds in pots on a sunny windowsill. Sow tomato seeds indoors from January to April. Sow the seeds thinly in seed trays filled with peat-free seed compost, water gently, and cover lightly with a 1cm (1/4in) layer of compost or vermiculite. Cover with clingfilm to create a humid environment. Place the trays somewhere warm, such as a heated greenhouse or sunny windowsill. Remove the clingfilm once the seeds have germinated and keep the compost moist. If grown on a windowsill, try to turn the tray regularly so the plants don’t lean towards the light.
