Harvest
Even better than the ever-popular ‘Tumbler’, British-bred Tomato ‘Terenzo’ Bush cascades from pots and hanging baskets, producing masses of bright red cherry tomatoes with superb flavour all summer. This compact, bushy tomato is ideal for small gardens and patios. The fruits have good resistance to splitting and disease.
Sow indoors
Level fill a module tray with seed compost firming with the base of another tray. Water well with a fine rose. Sow seeds individually and lightly cover with compost or vermiculite. Place in a propagator at 18-20°C or cover tray with cling film and leave in a warm room. Keep moist.
Grow on
When shoots appear, remove cling film. Keep seedlings in a light position, but shade from direct sunlight. When plants have 4 leaves transplant to 8cm pots of potting compost. Grow coolly and steadily. Minimum temperature 10°C.
Plant out
Gradually accustom plants to outdoor conditions for 2-3 weeks before planting out when temperatures exceed 10°C. Sunny sheltered sites are best. Transfer to large pots, minimum 30cm, or grow bags, 45cm apart.
Tips
Bush / trailing varieties are best grown with minimal or no support and do not need side shoots removing. Tomatoes are thirsty and hungry plants. Feed and water regularly and remember to ventilate your greenhouse on warm days.
How to grow
Tomatoes are easy to grow from seed, provided you have somewhere warm and sunny to sow them. A heated greenhouse is ideal, but you can also sow tomato seeds in pots on a sunny windowsill. Sow tomato seeds indoors from January to April. Sow the seeds thinly in seed trays filled with peat-free seed compost, water gently, and cover lightly with a 1cm (1/4in) layer of compost or vermiculite. Cover with clingfilm to create a humid environment. Place the trays somewhere warm, such as a heated greenhouse or sunny windowsill. Remove the clingfilm once the seeds have germinated and keep the compost moist. If grown on a windowsill, try to turn the tray regularly so the plants don’t lean towards the light.
