Wallflower 'Sugar Rush Mix'

Professional Grower Plugs:
Pot your plugs on as soon as possible after arrival, ideally within 3 days. If you can't pot them on straight away, keep them moist in a bright, sheltered position.

Before potting, check that the compost is moist. If the plugs feel dry, stand the tray in shallow water for a short time to allow them to take up moisture from below.

Fill 9cm pots with good-quality multipurpose or potting compost. Make a planting hole with a pencil or narrow dibber, carefully ease each plug from its tray and plant at the same depth it was growing in the tray. Gently firm the compost around the plug to ensure good contact with the roots, but avoid pressing it down too firmly as this can reduce drainage and the air spaces roots need. Water thoroughly using a watering can fitted with a fine rose.

Grow the plants on in a bright, sheltered position such as a greenhouse or cold frame, keeping the compost moist but not waterlogged. Allow around 3–4 weeks for the plants to establish, although they may take longer in cooler conditions. Once they're putting on healthy new growth and have developed a good root system, they're ready to be hardened off.

Gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7–10 days, initially placing them outside in a sheltered position during the day and bringing them back under cover at night. Once hardened off, plant into their final position in pots, containers, beds or borders.

Garden Ready Plants:
Garden Ready Plants can be planted straight into their final position. If you can't plant them immediately, keep them in a bright, sheltered spot and make sure they don't dry out.

Before planting, water the plants if the rootballs feel dry. Choose a position in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil. Plant at the same depth they were growing in their tray, gently firm the soil or compost around the roots and water thoroughly after planting.

Pots and containers:
Choose a container with good drainage holes and fill with good-quality multipurpose compost. Gently firm the compost rather than packing it down tightly, and leave around 2–3cm below the rim to make watering easier.

Space your wallflowers around 20cm apart to give the plants room to develop. Their upright habit makes them particularly useful for adding height to larger pots and mixed seasonal containers.

When planting a mixed container, position Sugar Rush towards the centre or back, with lower-growing bedding around it. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the compost moist but not waterlogged.

Top tip:
Position a pot of Sugar Rush somewhere you'll regularly pass it, such as beside your front door or along a path. You'll get to enjoy its fragrance as well as the flowers.

Wallflower 'Sugar Rush Mix' is a great way to add height to autumn and spring planting, making it an ideal partner for lower-growing bedding plants.

Plant with pansies, violas, primroses or bellis around the base, letting the taller wallflower spikes rise above them. You can either pick complementary colours for a coordinated display or mix several shades together for something much brighter.

Spring-flowering bulbs also work brilliantly with wallflowers. Daffodils and tulips can be planted beneath and between them in autumn, emerging in spring to add even more height and colour as Sugar Rush begins its second display.

Top tip:
Think in layers when filling a larger container: bulbs underneath, Sugar Rush for height and compact bedding around the edges. You'll get much more from the same pot as the seasons change.

Keep your wallflowers watered during dry spells, particularly those growing in containers, but avoid leaving the soil or compost waterlogged.

As flower spikes fade, snip them off just above a healthy set of leaves. Removing spent flowers helps keep the plants tidy and encourages them to put their energy into fresh growth rather than producing seed.

Flowering may slow or stop during colder winter weather. This is normal. Keep the plants cared for through winter and they'll be ready to put on fresh growth as conditions improve towards spring.

Plants growing in containers can be given a liquid feed once they're actively growing again in spring to support fresh growth and flowering.

Top tip:
Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves as you spot them, particularly around the base of the plant. This keeps your display looking tidy and helps maintain good airflow around the foliage.
