Bare Root Plants

Plant your bare-root wallflowers as soon as possible after arrival. Before planting, soak the roots in a bucket of cold water for around 30 minutes to rehydrate them after transit.

Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Remove any weeds, loosen the soil and add some well-rotted garden compost if needed.

Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots naturally, without bending or bunching them. Position each plant so the crown, where the roots meet the stems, sits level with the soil surface.

Backfill with soil, gently firm around the roots and water thoroughly. Keep the soil moist while your plants establish, particularly during dry spells, but avoid waterlogging.

Planting in Beds and Borders

Space your wallflowers around 25–30cm apart, allowing room for their upright stems to develop.

Planting in Pots and Patio Containers

Tall wallflowers can also be grown in larger pots and patio containers. For a fuller seasonal display, space plants around 20cm apart. Choose a container with drainage holes and use a free-draining compost. Keep the compost moist while the plants establish, without letting it become waterlogged.

Tall wallflowers are ideal for sunny beds and borders, where their upright flower spikes bring height, colour and fragrance to your spring garden.

Beds and Borders

Plant several together in groups or drifts for a fuller display. Their taller growth makes them particularly useful through the middle of a border, with lower-growing spring flowers towards the front.

Pots and Patio Containers

Tall wallflowers also make a lovely spring display in larger patio pots. Combine them with lower-growing spring flowers or bulbs for a mixture of heights, colours and textures.

Plant some near a path, doorway or seating area where you can enjoy their beautiful fragrance whenever you're outside.

Wallflowers and spring bulbs are a classic combination. Their colourful flower spikes look lovely amongst tulips and daffodils, giving your spring display a mixture of flower shapes and heights.

For a softer look, try combining them with cream, white or pastel tulips. Or make a bolder display with rich reds, oranges and purples.

You can also plant pansies, violas, primroses or Bellis towards the front of your border or container. Their lower-growing flowers provide colour around the base of your taller wallflowers.

Once your wallflowers are established, they need very little attention. Water during prolonged dry spells, but avoid keeping the soil constantly wet.

After severe frosts, check whether any plants have been lifted by the freezing and thawing soil. If needed, gently firm them back into place.

Remove faded flower spikes during spring to keep your display looking tidy. Once the main flowering season has finished, wallflowers grown as spring bedding are usually cleared to make room for summer plants.

You can also cut a few flowering stems to enjoy their fragrance indoors.

Bare Root Plants:
Your wallflowers are supplied as field-grown bare-root plants, lifted from the ground and packed without pots or compost.

They may look a little different from potted plants when they arrive, but this is normal. Plant them promptly and water them in well to help the roots settle into their new position.

Bare-root plants are an economical way to fill beds and borders with spring colour, particularly when you're planting larger groups.
