When can I plant daffodil bulbs?

Daffodil bulbs should be planted from September to November for flowers to appear from February through April.

Can I plant daffodil bulbs in January?

If you're planting daffodils in pots in January, you'll almost certainly see spring blooms. Planting in the ground might take a bit more work (and a touch of good luck), though. If the ground is frozen, break it up slightly and plant bulbs shallower before topping with mulch or compost.

How do I plant daffodil bulbs?

Like most options for spring flowering, daffodil bulbs will work best in a hole dug three times its depth. Break up compacted soil or plant your bulbs with some horticultural grit and compost to enable the root systems to flourish before they turn dormant over winter. If planting daffodil bulbs in containers, choose deep pots that will allow the roots room to grow.

How do I store daffodil bulbs?

Daffodils will regrow year after year with the bulbs being left in the ground, which may save you some storage space in the shed or greenhouse over winter. If you do wish to dig your bulbs up, knock off any excess dirt and allow them to dry out before storing them in a paper bag in a cool, dry and dark place. Any soft or broken bulbs can be discarded.

How many daffodil bulbs should I plant together?

This depends on what space you're trying to fill, but daffodils typically look their best when grouped. If planting in a container, lay a ring of bulbs around the outer edge before filling the middle. You can also make a 'bulb lasagne' by layering bulbs on top of each other – try to leave ample room between each layer so every plant has room to reach the surface. In borders and beds, clump groups of daffodil bulbs together to create charming pockets of spring sunshine.
