How should I grow a tomato from a seed?

  • You can begin by sewing your tomato seed
into a small pot with seed compost. Scatter the tomato seeds evenly and then cover them with vermiculite. Give your tomato seeds a good water and cover them with something to trap the moisture, such as clingfilm.
  • Remove your moisture trap when seedlings begin to show after about two weeks and place the pot in a sunny, sheltered spot.
  • Once your seedlings have begun growing leaves and reaching around 10cm tall, plant them individually in separate pots.
  • Around a month or so later they will be ready to plant into their final position in a greenhouse or outside in the ground. Make sure you to plant them deeply with the first set of leaves just reaching above the soil.
  • Water regularly, and look out for curling leaves as a sign of dehydration. Remember to keep on top of feeding and mulching. Support the plant with frames and remove lower leaves and shoots so feed and water go towards producing fruit.
  • Harvest mid-summer onwards when the tomato has reached its full colour and is firm but also slightly soft to the touch.
