When to sow Aster Seeds 

Aster seeds are typically sown indoors from February to April for early flowering displays. Seeds can also be sown outdoors in late spring once the soil has warmed and the risk of frost has passed. Starting seeds indoors often produces stronger plants and earlier blooms. 

How to grow Asters from Seed 

Asters are easy to grow from seed and reward gardeners with masses of colourful flowers throughout summer and autumn. Sow seeds thinly on the surface of moist seed compost and lightly cover with a fine layer of compost or vermiculite. Place in a warm, bright location and keep the compost moist but not waterlogged. Once seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots and gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions before planting out. Grow asters in fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny position for the best flowering displays. 

How long does it take for Asters to flower? 

Most annual asters flower around 12 to 16 weeks after sowing, depending on the variety and growing conditions. Flowers typically begin appearing from mid-summer and continue well into autumn, providing long-lasting colour in borders, containers and cutting gardens. Regular deadheading can help encourage additional blooms throughout the season.
