Description

Mondeo produces high-quality spears with handsome purple tips. Spears appear in big numbers on fully hardy plants. Tasty when steamed and covered with a little butter.

Being a male hybrid Mondeo produces spears an inch thick with tight tips so you get good substantial spears with a meaty bite.

Great disease resistance to rust and produces plants with attractive, tall ferny growth. We recommend you allow your crowns to develop for three years before harvesting.

From five crowns you can expect around 100 spears every year. You can pick a small amount of Mondeo if you can’t wait to harvest in the first or second year, but patience pays dividends in the end.

Crown Age and Bed Establishment

These crowns are 1 year old and will be in their 2nd year as you plant them this spring. Usually, an asparagus bed takes 3 years to start to be productive if planted with crowns. Best not to harvest any spears in year 1 and maybe 2. If in year 2 there are a lot of spears then the bed is productive, if only a handful, do not cut them and leave them in the ground. The reason for doing this is the energy of the plant needs to be focussed on increasing root volume and getting established, rather than energy into spear production. If you keep cutting the spears the plant will naturally want to produce more, rather than producing roots. This will in the long term produce a stronger plant and will produce heavier crops in subsequent seasons.
