Flowering
This exquisite Californian poppy has petals that shimmer like silk in shades of peachy orange flushed with bright coral pink. Flowering abundantly all through summer, it looks fantastic in a sunny border, attracting pollinators. It’s easy to grow and makes beautiful cut flowers. The RHS has awarded this stunning poppy its prestigious Award of Garden Merit for its reliable performance.
Sow outdoors
Rake soil to provide a firm, even surface. Sow seeds thinly in pre-watered soil, lightly covering them with a little more soil. Sowings made in semi-circular lines create a natural ‘drift’ effect. Keep moist until seedlings appear and as required in dry spells.
Thin
When large enough to handle, thin seedlings to encourage development and to prevent overcrowding.
Advice
Always sow direct in their flowering positions, as their long tap roots mean they do not transplant well. Late summer and autumn sown seedlings may benefit from cloche or fleece protection when hard frosts threaten. Such plants generally bloom earlier the following summer than spring sown plants.
How to grow
Sow seeds on to the surface of pre-watered seed compost, but don't cover them. Keep warm, around 20°C and keep moist, but not wet. Allow 1-2 weeks for germination.
