Pea seeds can be sown outdoors from March to May, depending on the weather. For an early harvest, sow indoors from February and transplant when the soil is workable. Early varieties can be sown as soon as the soil is dry enough to work in early spring. For autumn harvest, sow in mid-summer.
Sow seeds 2-3 cm deep in well-drained, fertile soil. Space them about 5 cm apart in rows 45-60 cm apart. If you’re growing climbing peas, provide a trellis or support for them to climb. Water well after planting and keep the soil moist, especially during flowering and pod development.
Peas typically germinate within 7-14 days and are ready to harvest in around 10-16 weeks, depending on the variety. Early varieties can be ready in as little as 10 weeks, while later varieties may take longer. Regular harvesting encourages continuous pod production throughout the growing season.
Peas are easy to grow and provide delicious, sweet, and tender pods perfect for fresh eating, soups, and stews. They are a great source of plant-based protein and can improve soil quality by fixing nitrogen. Growing your own peas ensures fresh, flavourful produce free from pesticides.
Peas grow well in garden beds, raised beds, and containers. They thrive in well-drained, fertile soil and prefer a sunny or partially shaded spot. If growing climbing peas, ensure they have a sturdy support system, such as a trellis or netting.
